class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are sourced or manufactured overseas, <\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">with<\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> China<\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> accounting for a particularly large percentage of goods<\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> sold at retail<\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E261\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> As noted <\/span><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">in <\/span><a id=\"E263\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/03\/coronavirus-is-proving-that-we-need-more-resilient-supply-chains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">a recent <i>Harvard Business Review<\/i> <\/span><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">article<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E266\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, data from <\/span><span id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Resilinc<\/span><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E271\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> a <\/span><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">supply chain mapping and risk monitoring company<\/span><span id=\"E273\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E274\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> show that<\/span><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E276\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">the world&#8217;s 1,000 largest companies <\/span><span id=\"E277\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">or their suppliers <\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">have over 12,000 facilities, including warehouses and factories, in <\/span><span id=\"E279\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">parts of<\/span><span id=\"E280\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">China, Italy and South Korea<\/span><span id=\"E282\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E283\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E284\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">which <\/span><span id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are <\/span><span id=\"E286\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">profoundly <\/span><span id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">affected by coronavirus quarantines. <\/span><span id=\"E288\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Manufacturing slowdowns, travel restrictions and port closures have <\/span><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">led to delays in shipments of materials and finished products, and <\/span><span id=\"E290\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">now <\/span><span id=\"E291\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">thousands of companies are dealing with <\/span><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">tangled international supply chain<\/span><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> bottlenecks<\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E295\"><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">But<\/span><span id=\"E297\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E298\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> of course, it<\/span><span id=\"E299\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">&#8217;<\/span><span id=\"E300\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">s not only supply that&#8217;s<\/span><span id=\"E301\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">\u00a0being<\/span><span id=\"E302\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> affected by this new virus and the measures enacted to prevent its spread\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E303\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">&#8212; consumer <\/span><span id=\"E304\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">demand <\/span><span id=\"E305\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">for many items <\/span><span id=\"E306\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">is also shifting<\/span><span id=\"E307\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. <\/span><a id=\"E308\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/15\/business\/china-coronavirus-lockdown.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E309\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\"><i>The New York Times<\/i><\/span><span id=\"E310\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\"> reported<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E311\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> in February that <\/span><span id=\"E312\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">more than half <\/span><span id=\"E313\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">the population of China <\/span><span id=\"E314\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">was at that point under some degree of residential lockdown<\/span><span id=\"E315\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E316\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">By mid-March, the entire country of Italy was in lockdown. <\/span><span id=\"E317\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Despite <\/span><span id=\"E318\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">consumers&#8217; <\/span><span id=\"E319\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">being forced to <\/span><span id=\"E320\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">mov<\/span><span id=\"E321\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">e<\/span><span id=\"E322\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> more and more <\/span><span id=\"E323\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">of their <\/span><span id=\"E324\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">shopping online, <\/span><span id=\"E325\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">self-isolation and quarantine policies, travel restrictions, and<\/span><span id=\"E326\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E327\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">shelter-in-place\/stay-at-home orders <\/span><span id=\"E328\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are already <\/span><span id=\"E329\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">deflating<\/span><span id=\"E330\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E331\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">category demand and <\/span><span id=\"E332\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">sales for thousands of companies.<\/span><span id=\"E333\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"E334\"><span id=\"E335\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Shoppers <\/span><span id=\"E336\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Are <\/span><span id=\"E337\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Buying Essentials<\/span><span id=\"E338\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> When They Do Go Out to Shop<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E339\"><span id=\"E340\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Although <\/span><span id=\"E341\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">the effects of disruptions in the <\/span><span id=\"E342\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">global<\/span><span id=\"E343\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E344\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">supply chain <\/span><span id=\"E345\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">may not be immediately <\/span><span id=\"E346\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">noticed by <\/span><span id=\"E347\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">American <\/span><span id=\"E348\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">shoppers<\/span><span id=\"E349\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, a<\/span><span id=\"E350\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><a id=\"E351\" href=\"https:\/\/www.firstinsight.com\/white-papers-posts\/the-impact-of-coronavirus-on-purchase-decisions-and-behavior-v2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E352\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">consumer<\/span><span id=\"E353\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\"> <\/span><span id=\"E354\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">study from First Insight<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E355\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> found that<\/span><span id=\"E356\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> news of the virus is impacting the shopping behavior of 75 percent of respondents, up from 45 percent (a 70 percent increase) when comparing to a <\/span><a id=\"E357\" href=\"https:\/\/www.firstinsight.com\/white-papers-posts\/the-impact-of-coronavirus-on-purchase-decisions-and-behavior\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E358\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">survey<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E359\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> fielded in late February. Women and baby boomers have showed a significant change in purchase behavior. Both groups had been slower to change behavior <\/span><span id=\"E360\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">compared to<\/span><span id=\"E361\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> their gender and generational counterparts, but are now in greater alignment.<\/span><span id=\"E362\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E363\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Seventy-one percent of women now say the virus is impacting where and how they shop<\/span><span id=\"E364\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, a 115 percent increase from late February, compared to 67 percent of men (a 76 percent increase). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E364\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">While millennials report the greatest impact on purchase decisions (80 percent, a 48 percent increase from the previous survey), baby boomers now have aligned behavior more with their younger counterparts, with 73 percent saying the same, a 121 percent increase from the prior survey.<\/span><span id=\"E365\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E366\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Ninety-<\/span><span id=\"E367\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">eight<\/span><span id=\"E368\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> percent<\/span><span id=\"E369\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> of all <\/span><span id=\"E370\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">respondents <\/span><span id=\"E371\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">believe<\/span><span id=\"E372\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E373\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">the outbreak will somewhat or significantly affect the U<\/span><span id=\"E374\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E375\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">S<\/span><span id=\"E376\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E377\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> economy<\/span><span id=\"E378\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E379\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">While <\/span><span id=\"E380\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">all generations <\/span><span id=\"E381\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are changing their shopping habits in the wake of th<\/span><span id=\"E382\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">is pandemic<\/span><span id=\"E383\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, shoppers <\/span><span id=\"E384\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">of all ages <\/span><span id=\"E385\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are still flocking to brick-and-mortar stores to stock up on <\/span><span id=\"E386\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">essentials.<\/span><span id=\"E387\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> Target CEO Brian Cornell <\/span><a id=\"E388\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/target-stock-earnings-oronavirus-sales-store-traffic-51583270295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E389\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">noted,<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E390\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E391\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">&#8220;<\/span><span id=\"E392\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">W<\/span><span id=\"E393\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">e&#8217;ve certainly seen a surge in-store traffic as guests begin to stock up on those household essentials <\/span><span id=\"E394\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">[and]<\/span><span id=\"E395\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> those core food and <\/span><span id=\"E396\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">beverage items.&#8221;<\/span><span id=\"E398\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> According to <\/span><a id=\"E399\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/03\/05\/business\/costco-coronavirus-shopping-retail\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E400\" class=\"qowt-stl-Hyperlink\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E401\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, sales at Costco in February were up 12.4 percent from a year ago, and the company attributed 3 percent of that to an uptick in consumer demand<\/span><span id=\"E402\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> for essentials<\/span><span id=\"E403\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> from concerns over coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pageBorders\"><span style=\"font-size: 1em\">Looking Ahead<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E406\"><span id=\"E407\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Retail has always been a<\/span><span id=\"E408\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">n industry that <\/span><span id=\"E409\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">thrives off <\/span><span id=\"E410\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">proactive<\/span><span id=\"E411\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> thinking<\/span><span id=\"E412\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, and this is a time that absolutely requires it<\/span><span id=\"E413\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. Companies are already facing a time squeeze, with <\/span><span id=\"E414\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">summer and fall<\/span><span id=\"E415\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> orders and shipments delayed. Those delays <\/span><span id=\"E416\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">will have cascading effects over<\/span><span id=\"E417\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> the rest of the year<\/span><span id=\"E418\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E419\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> and retailers and brands will need to significantly speed up their holiday product development, sourcing and shipping operations to ensure that October and November holiday deliveries don&#8217;t arrive <\/span><span id=\"E420\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">in January.<\/span><span id=\"E421\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E422\"><span id=\"E423\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Even though some overseas factories are beginning to come back online and some shipping routes are reopening, <\/span><span id=\"E424\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">manufacturing delays and <\/span><span id=\"E425\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">snarled supply chains will not instantly sort themselves out<\/span><span id=\"E426\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> once the outbreak is no longer considered a crisis. Therefore,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E427\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">companies need to move quickly now<\/span><span id=\"E428\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. <\/span><a id=\"E429\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coronavirus-fallout-threatens-most-vulnerable-u-s-retailers-11583365335?mod=hp_lead_pos4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span id=\"E430\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri qowt-stl-Hyperlink\"><i>The Wall Street Journal<\/i><\/span><\/a><span id=\"E431\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> recently summed up the thoughts of <\/span><span id=\"E432\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Thomas O&#8217;Connor, senior director and research analyst for supply chains at Gartner<\/span><span id=\"E433\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E434\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E435\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">this way:<\/span><span id=\"E436\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> &#8220;<\/span><span id=\"E437\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">If <\/span><span id=\"E438\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">production in China doesn&#8217;t return to normal levels by late April, <\/span><span id=\"E439\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">U.<\/span><span id=\"E440\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">S. retailers could face challenges stocking up in time for the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E441\"><span id=\"E442\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Those<\/span><span id=\"E443\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> retailers and<\/span><span id=\"E444\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> brands <\/span><span id=\"E445\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">that<\/span><span id=\"E446\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> can best predict future deman<\/span><span id=\"E447\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">d<\/span><span id=\"E448\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E449\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">for particular products, <\/span><span id=\"E450\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">and release the right product, at the right price, at the right time, using <\/span><span id=\"E451\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">predictive analytic<\/span><span id=\"E452\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E453\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">tools at their disposal, will <\/span><span id=\"E454\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">be better positioned\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E455\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">for the rest of the year. <\/span><span id=\"E456\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">While <\/span><span id=\"E457\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">many<\/span><span id=\"E458\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> retailers and brands still rely on physical samples being sent from the manufacturer, and in-store testing which can be time consuming and often costly<\/span><span id=\"E459\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">, digitizing the supply chain <\/span><span id=\"E460\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">will be critical to success in the new retail reality<\/span><span id=\"E461\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">. With today&#8217;s retail technology, digital product creation and 3D design are table stakes, and can significantly shorten the supply chain lead time. <\/span><span id=\"E462\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Companies will need to continually <\/span><span id=\"E463\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">assess what aspects of their inventory will be most affected by a disrupted supply chain, where they can afford to raise prices, and what products <\/span><span id=\"E464\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">they should<\/span><span id=\"E465\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> introduce <\/span><span id=\"E466\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">at<\/span><span id=\"E467\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> a time whe<\/span><span id=\"E468\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">n<\/span><span id=\"E469\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> many <\/span><span id=\"E470\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">consumers <\/span><span id=\"E471\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">are preoccupied with safety and security. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E472\"><span id=\"E473\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">Retailers that<\/span><span id=\"E474\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> tak<\/span><span id=\"E475\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">e<\/span><span id=\"E476\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> advantage of<\/span><span id=\"E477\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> digital product creation and<\/span><span id=\"E478\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> data insights that <\/span><span id=\"E480\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">take into account<\/span><span id=\"E482\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> the preferences and opinions of consumers <\/span><span id=\"E483\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">will be better able to<\/span><span id=\"E484\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> mitigate the effects the novel coronavirus<\/span><span id=\"E485\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\"> will have on their businesses throughout the rest of the year<\/span><span id=\"E486\" class=\"qowt-font4-Calibri\">.
