It&#8217;s become a source of inconvenience &#8212; for both customers who have to wait for a salesperson to unlock the cabinet, and for employees to stop what they&#8217;re doing to dig out the key and unlock the cabinet &#8212; in a place that&#8217;s meant to be ultra convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing this inconvenience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvshealth.com\/news\/innovation\/introducing-the-cvs-health-app-your-go-to-companion-for-health-and-wellness.html\">CVS on Tuesday announced<\/a> it was rolling out a new app with a feature that allows users to bypass the need for a salesperson to open the cabinet &#8212; but only if the customer is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apps\/cvs-tries-to-juice-app-signups-with-cabinet-unlocking-feature-203954391.html\">savvy enough with technology<\/a> and is part of the company&#8217;s loyalty program. In order to unlock the cabinet on their own, the shopper will need to log into the app, join the store&#8217;s Wi-Fi and enable Bluetooth on their phone. Once that happens, the user will see a button on the app that allows them to unlock the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>This feature is being rolled out in just three stores <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/28\/business\/cvs-app-pharmacy-locked-cabinets.html\">in New York<\/a> right now, but Tilak Mandadi, executive vice president at CVS Health, told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/shopping.yahoo.com\/rdlw?merchantId=2f007401-3eaa-4237-b69b-54ccbe125502&amp;siteId=us-engadget&amp;pageId=1p-autolink&amp;contentUuid=973501c6-c8a7-43f1-84d0-94612226d875&amp;featureId=text-link&amp;merchantName=The+Wall+Street+Journal&amp;custData=eyJzb3VyY2VOYW1lIjoiV2ViLURlc2t0b3AtVmVyaXpvbiIsImxhbmRpbmdVcmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy53c2ouY29tL2FydGljbGVzL2N2cy13YW50cy10by1oZWxwLXlvdS1zcGVuZC1sZXNzLXRpbWUtaW4tY3ZzLTg0ZmRiNTZiIiwiY29udGVudFV1aWQiOiI5NzM1MDFjNi1jOGE3LTQzZjEtODRkMC05NDYxMjIyNmQ4NzUiLCJvcmlnaW5hbFVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndzai5jb20vYXJ0aWNsZXMvY3ZzLXdhbnRzLXRvLWhlbHAteW91LXNwZW5kLWxlc3MtdGltZS1pbi1jdnMtODRmZGI1NmIifQ&amp;signature=AQAAAb9f8QMzdltRomhD572CZnOYbIfXzZiwcu8ABNZuRmjj&amp;gcReferrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Fcvs-wants-to-help-you-spend-less-time-in-cvs-84fdb56b&amp;refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2Fapps%2Fcvs-tries-to-juice-app-signups-with-cabinet-unlocking-feature-203954391.html&amp;uuid=wKZt01vlq7IHz3Ov0885&amp;uuid=9BYowHQ25K5uQisV0537\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em> that the pilot program has gone well so far, and the company&#8217;s next step will be expanding the feature to 10-15 stores.<\/p>\n<p>Other features of the new app include personalized prescription barcodes for easier checkout; an artificial intelligence-powered search tool; and the ability to manage appointments, prescriptions and vaccines for the entire family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Total Retail&#8217;s Take:\u00a0<\/strong>The National Retail Federation (NRF) <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media-center\/press-releases\/shoplifting-incidents-jump-93-since-pre-covid-according-to-new-industry-study\">released a study in December<\/a> showing that retailers had reported a 93 percent increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents per year in 2023 vs. 2019, and a 90 percent increase in dollar loss due to shoplifting in the same period. <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/research\/the-impact-of-retail-theft-violence-2024\">The study<\/a> surveyed 164 brands, which said they experienced a combined average of 177 shoplifting incidents per day in 2023, including some that were violent and put employees and shoppers at risk. <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/advocacy\/policy-issues\/organized-retail-crime\">The NRF said<\/a> many of these shoplifting crimes were committed by organized retail crime gangs &#8212; groups of people who steal large quantities of merchandise from a number of stores and sell the stolen goods for cash at places like auction sites and flea markets.<\/p>\n<p>With its new app feature, CVS &#8212; which has been facing sluggish growth and slow earnings in recent months, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/18\/business\/cvs-ceo-karen-lynch.html\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a> &#8212; is trying to deter impatient shoppers from walking out of its stores and going to buy the products on Amazon.com, where there&#8217;s no plexiglass to get around.
