ChatGPT Launches 'Instant Checkout,' Enabling Purchasing Within the Platform
OpenAI is integrating e-commerce into the heart of ChatGPT with the introduction of Instant Checkout, a new feature that lets users complete purchases directly inside the chat interface. The artificial intelligence platform has begun offering access to shops on Etsy and Shopify, before opening up to more than 1 million merchants using Shopify’s platform. For example, if you query ChatGPT for the "best mattress under $1,000" or "gift for an avid reader," the tool will suggest relevant products. If consumers wants to purchase one of ChatGPT's recommendations, they can now do so within the chat. The merchant will process payment and fulfill the order, paying ChatGPT a small fee on completed transactions.
Total Retail's Take: This is the first step into the agentic commerce future, with AI agents acting on behalf of shoppers to purchase items. This is the natural and expected evolution from consumers using ChatGPT for product discovery into actual conversion within the platform. This development provides yet another viable channel for retailers to engage with shoppers at the point of sale. In fact, 700 million weekly users are already using ChatGPT for tasks such as browsing products, according to OpenAI.
So what steps should retailers be taking to prepare for the future of agentic commerce? One action they can take is to differentiate their direct-to-consumer relationships so customers come directly to the brands and bypass platforms such as ChatGPT. The other approach is to embrace agentic commerce by optimizing their website content for generative engines (i.e., GEO), including creating concise and easy-to-comprehend copy for AI search engines.
